Project Overview

The Boat Shed at Half Moon Bay Marina stands as a testament to modern architectural design and engineering, situated strategically on the edge of the Tāmaki River. This facility emphasises functionality while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of its environmental context.

The Boat Shed is a large-scale structure measuring 145 meters in length, 18 meters in depth, and 12 meters in height. The design is specifically tailored to withstand the challenges posed by industrial activities within and the harsh marine environment outside. Manson were commissioned by Half Moon Bay Marina to design, fabricate and install a large-scale aluminium fin wall that would be striking, yet durable.

The Solution: Streamline construction to reduce disruption

To streamline the construction process and reduce disruption to the busy boatyard, the team focused on extensive off-site prefabrication. This approach not only sped up on-site assembly but also ensured precision in the fabrication and installation phases.

The centrepiece of the design is a series of 54 uniquely shaped aluminium fins, each 7.5 meters high. These fins, constructed from marine-grade aluminium and coated in white powder, provide a striking visual element. The fins’ dynamic 3D design interacts with shifting light throughout the day, creating a constantly evolving visual effect. The emphasis on using durable materials was key to ensuring low maintenance and the project’s long-term sustainability.

The result

More than just a functional boat maintenance facility, the Boat Shed at Half Moon Bay Marina has become an architectural landmark. It reflects thoughtful design that positively impacts the surrounding urban landscape. Through its innovative use of materials and seamless integration of form, function, and sustainability, the Boat Shed stands as a symbol of modern ecological consciousness and design excellence.
